Lt. Harold Joseph Tushla and 9 fellow crewmen were last seen in their B-24 bomber on Monday, February 15, 1943 near the bay of Naples, Italy.

This website is the home base for efforts launched on July 17, 2021 by Gerard Keating, with the support of his son, Alec, and daughter, Reese, to find and repatriate the remains of their cousin, Lt. Harold Joseph Tushla, and his 9 fellow crewmen.

Celhalopdos Details

Here's What We Know

The mission left the Tobruk Libya landing ground at 1240 hours consisting of 12 B-24s that were flying directly to Naples via Cape Aaper and Cape Rizzuto in Italy. Their mission was to bomb nine merchant vessels in the Naples harbor. But, two of the B-24s experienced mechanical problems during the approach and had to return to Tobruk.

The final bombing run approach began at 1820 hours with the remaining 10 B–24s with the formation coming around Mount Vesuvius and circling towards the harbor and out to the sea. All 10 B-24s were able to drop their bombs on the harbor resulting in the sinking of two merchant ships – the steamers Lecce and Modica – and badly damaging the Italian Navy destroyer Corraziere.

The Italian anti-aircraft gun’s flak guided with German support and radar was intense and accurate causing initial damage to the Celhalopdos. In addition, 18 Macchi MC202 Italian Fighters from the Italian Air Force 371st Squadron of the 22nd Autonomous Terrestrial Fighter Group scrambled to intercept the formation out of the Naples Capodichino Airport engaged with the formation causing further damage to the Celhalopodos.

At this point the Celhalopodos broke formation and turned back to the Italian coast which was estimated to be 5-10 miles away. It had lost its two inboard engines. But, official reports stated that several crew members from the other planes in the formation last saw it flying under control and towards the coast.

A news story in the “Il Mattino” – the largest daily newspaper – from Naples on February 17, 1943 reported that one B-24 was shot down and two others sustained damage and were last seek trailing smoke as they left the area.

The remaining 9 B-24s from the mission all returned to Tobruk Libya at 2250 hours.

From this point nothing more is known about what happened to the Celhalopodos and its crew.
